Copenhagen-Malmö

Countries: Denmark , Sweden

Overview

Copenhagen, capital of Denmark, is a metropolitan area home to 1.8 million people. Malmö is a city in southern Sweden, capital of the county of Skåne (Scania), which has a population of 1.2 million. These two regions share a common history, as Skåne was once part of the Kingdom of Denmark (until 1658).

The Øresund cooperation project is unusual in that it functions at a regional scale rather than urban. Copenhagen and Malmö play a leading role. The 16 km bridge-tunnel that has linked the two cities since the year 2000 (in less than 30 minutes by train and 50 minutes by car) is the symbol of a strong political will shared on either side of the border.
