Towards a conurbation project for the SaarMoselle Eurodistrict

The MOT has been commissioned by the SaarMoselle Eurodistrict to support the cross-border territory in implementing the recommendations drawn up during the Franco-German pilot project for spatial planning (MORO).

The aim of the MORO project was to study how spatial development in border regions could be made more coherent by using the German Planspiel method, bringing together those responsible for spatial planning and development in Germany and France. Two Franco-German "Planspiele", one in the Upper Rhine region and one in the Greater Region, have thus made it possible to explore how territorial development in border regions could be better organised and acquire abecome more engaging character.

In the Greater Region, the thematic focus was on a more integrated approach to spatial planning for the SaarMoselle cross-border conurbation through the development of a strategic and operational conurbation plan: the "conurbation project", which is part of the 2021-2027 Territorial Strategy of the SaarMoselle Eurodistrict.

On 17 October 17th and 22 November 22nd 2023, two workshops led by the MOT were held with participants from the regional planning, economic development, transport and political sectors of the SaarMoselle catchment living area.

The aim of these workshops, held in Stiring-Wendel and Saarbrücken, was to prioritise the recommendations developed during the Franco-German MORO project in order to design the framework for a project that would enable work to begin on drawing up the "conurbation project".

The results of the workshops were presented to the Eurodistrict Steering Committee on 19 January 19th 2024 at Saarbrücken Castle. The workshops enabled the architecture of a new project to be designvised, combining the issues of observation and cross-border inter-knowledge in the field of planning. This future project could be supported by European INTERREG VI A Greater Region funds from the Eurodistrict's Functional Zone.
