Emmanuel Macron's state visit to Switzerland: cross-border issues at the heart of discussions

President Emmanuel Macron's state visit to Switzerland on November 15th and 16th, 2023, at the invitation of the Swiss Federal Council, put the spotlight on cross-border issues.
"Our desire is, on all cross-border subjects, to turn a new page", Emmanuel Macron stressed, calling for efforts on key subjects on this border such as healthcare (access to care, staff shortages, training...) and mobility, including that of students. "Everything that structures cross-border relations must now be included in a text, a more institutionalized form of cooperation, which should enable us to provide an even more stable framework for our cross-border residents", he asserted.
Border MPs, such as Olga Givernet, MP for Pays de Gex, seized the opportunity of this news to highlight the needs of border territories: "There is a strong political impetus that has been given, and what is interesting is that the President of the Confederation also seemed receptive to the need to turn this new page [...]" and to highlight that "a mission has, for example, been entrusted to the Prefect of Ain on the subject of water, and another regarding health to that of Haute-Savoie".
