Towards a Corsican-Sardinian cross-border reserve recognised by UNESCO?

The Corsican Territorial Authority (Collectivité de Corse) and the Autonomous Region of Sardinia have launched a fundamental process of cooperation to ensure joint management of environmental issues in the Bucchi di Bunifaziu area.

On January 25th 2024, the President of the Corsican Environment Office and his Sardinian counterpart, the Assessore della difesa dell'ambiente (Councilor for environmental protection), formalised the signing of a memorandum of understanding structuring a partnership approach to the creation of a UNESCO Man and Biosphere (MAB) cross-border reserve.

The aim is to ensure joint management of environmental issues in a biogeographical area of major importance at the heart of the western Mediterranean. "The aim of a cross-border MAB reserve is to act as a catalyst for skills, superimposed on existing protected areas, in order to pursue common objectives", states the joint press release. "This founding act has a strong political dimension and demonstrates the joint desire of Corsica and Sardinia to be part of a unifying international framework".

It should also be noted that by undertaking this cross-border cooperation project, the Corsican Territorial Authority "is demonstrating its ability to bring together the necessary dynamics to translate the international issues targeted by the Quirinal Treaty into concrete, structured actions".
