French and German firefighters work together around the Rhine

With the signing of an agreement between Bas-Rhin and Rhineland-Palatinate on September 27th in Mulhouse, French and German firefighters can now work together throughout the cross-border area along the Rhine, in the event of fire or disaster.

The agreement was concluded within the framework of the Upper Rhine Conference. A first agreement had already been signed in 2021 between Haut-Rhin, Bas-Rhin and Baden-Württemberg.

"In practice, joint interventions by the three countries' [(French, German, and Swiss)] emergency services have already taken place. The agreement establishes the administrative framework for these operations. Mutual aid in the event of disasters and crisis management is the priority for the new school year, after a summer marked by fires", said Josiane Chevalier, Prefect of the Grand Est region, who will chair the Upper Rhine Conference until the end of the year.
