Adaptation to climate change

The climate and energy framework for 2030 sets targets and strategic objectives at the EU level for the period 2021-2030. The key objectives for 2030 are as follows: reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40% (compared to 1990 levels – the EU has committed to reducing CO2 emissions by at least 55% by 2030); increase the share of renewable energy to at least 32%; improve energy efficiency by at least 32.5%.

This topic is gaining importance at the European level and is a legitimate concern in a cross-border context. Numerous projects have already been set in motion for adaptation to climate change and hazard prevention in border areas. In parallel to the climate change international conference held in 2015 in Paris, many Interreg programmes have reinforced their environmental commitment by reaffirming their efforts to combat climate change.

For the 2019-2024 period, the European Commission established a Green Deal for Europe to transform the Union into a modern, competitive economy that is environmentally friendly and efficient in resource use, ensuring:

• the end of net greenhouse gas emissions by 2050,
• economic growth decoupled from resource use,
• no one is left behind.
