On the French-Spanish border, an Institute for Cross-Border Cooperation from the academic world takes shape

On both sides of the Pyrenees, the border territories have a long history of cooperation and are involved in a multitude of cross-border projects in all fields, testifying to the vitality of exchanges across the border.
But in their cross-border relations, administrations, local bodies, businesses and associations are still faced with obstacles linked to a lack of knowledge of their neighbour's administrative, legal, economic, linguistic and cultural environment.
Based on this observation, the three border universities - the Université de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour (UPPA) via the European Documentation and Research Centre (CDRE), the Public University of Navarre (UPNA) and the University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU) - are committed to an integrated vision of the territories by strengthening the knowledge of border players about the cross-border issues they encounter. Their ambition is to create a cross-border cooperation institute on the French-Spanish border.
With a view to its establishment, a three-year project (2023-2026) is designed to better identify the needs of actors in the cross-border territory, structure the body and co-create and test a range of services (studies, training, study days, etc.).
The conference to launch this Institute for Cross-Border Cooperation was held on January 26th, 2024 in Bayonne, as part of the Spain-France-Andorra Territorial Cooperation Operational Programme (POCTEFA 21-27), co-financed by the European Union's European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The MOT took part.
