A-MONT Mission: a new cross-border strategy for the Northern Alps

The end of 2024 marked the start of a new mission for the MOT: supported by the Piedmont Region as lead partner, the A-MONT initiative (cross-border mountain framework agreement) which aims to strengthen the dynamics of territorial cooperation between France and Italy in the Northern Alps.

The aim of A-MONT is to define a cross-border strategy for the mountain territories shared by Piedmont, the Aosta Valley and Savoy. The first themes to emerge as priorities from these inital months of analysis are transport, infrastructure, attractiveness and youth. These areas reflect the needs of the Alpine border regions, particularly in terms of connectivity and sustainable development.

During the initial phases of the study, the MOT produced a map of the territories concerned, including both a central perimeter and a broader zone of influence, as well as a cartographic analysis of the territorial dynamics that have marked the last decade in order to identify the strengths and challenges specific to this cross-border area, which is highly specific in terms of its geography.
The project partners (Regione Autonoma Valle d'Aosta, UNCEM, Fondation Émile Chanoux and the Département de la Savoie) have agreed to strengthen their collaboration by sharing data and involving key players in the process. The mission also aims to develop synergies with other Interreg projects in the ‘Better Governance’ area, such as Observ'Alp and Alcotraité.

Although the mission has been delayed by numerous cross-border administrative obstacles, the analyses led by the MOT are progressing in close collaboration with the Agence Alpine des Territoires (AGATE) and the Politecnico di Torino (Dipartimento Interateneo di Scienze, Progetto e Politiche del Territorio). A meeting involving the political level is scheduled to take place in Turin at the end of February, before broadening the discussions to include other stakeholders in the region.
