Frontem conference on the Canada-US border

As part of the Frontem project, a conference entitled "Cross-Border Relations on the Canada/United States Border and the European Union: MultiLevel Governance?" was held on July 6th and 7th at the University of Victoria in Canada, with Jean Peyrony, Director General of the MOT.

The seminar focused on a comparison of European borders (France-Belgium, Denmark-Germany, Republic of Ireland-Northern Ireland) and American borders, in particular the cross-border Cascadia region between British Columbia and Washington State. This latter border between the United States and Canada is characterised by strong economic integration, but also by the absence of any plans for institutional integration. Among the issues shared with European cross-border regions are the need for an integrated approach to borders, covering both security and development, and the rise in telework, particularly cross-border telework, which is accompanied by a need for new regulations.

To discuss multi-level governance and the lessons learned from crises at European borders, Jean Peyrony based his remarks on a study carried out by the MOT for the European Commission in 2022, which assessed border management during the COVID crisis, characterised by a lack of coordination between states.
