Court ruling confirms exclusion of cross-border pupils in Geneva
The Geneva courts have upheld the State Council’s decision to apply the principle of schooling pupils in their place of residence from the start of the 2026 school year. Faced with an increase in the number of cross-border pupils, the Geneva Grand Council had decided that children residing in France would no longer be able to attend school in Geneva, which sparked a strong reaction in France. The families’ appeals were therefore rejected.
2,500 pupils affected
Approximately 2,500 children residing in France or in the canton of Vaud are affected. They will have to continue their education in the French system, except for those already enrolled in a school cycle, who will be able to complete it thanks to a transitional arrangement. This decision illustrates the ongoing tensions in the management of school enrolment and highlights the importance of constructive cross-border dialogue for the benefit of all residents in the area.
