A new study to improve regional statistics on cross-border workers

Commissioned by the DG REGIO, the « Study on Cross-Border Data Collection », conducted between October 2024 and July 2026, analyses the available data on cross-border workers in Europe. Based on 2023 data, it identifies around 1.3 million cross-border workers, while highlighting the limitations of current statistics and the significant disparities between border regions. It shows that more detailed and comparable data are essential to better tailor public policies to the needs of these territories, particularly in the areas of transport, housing and healthcare. The study also explores the possibility of producing these statistics regularly using existing administrative data.
