“40 Years of Schengen in Times of Border Controls”

This ITEM Brief examines 40 years of internal border controls within the Schengen Area. The effectiveness and legality of these controls, carried out by Member States, are open to question.

An ex-post evaluation of the 2024 revision of the Schengen Borders Code, currently being carried out by ITEM with the participation of the MOT, is expected in autumn 2025. It will be presented at a conference in Brussels on 24 November.
