“Common Ground – Shaping Regions Across Borders”: projects to strengthen citizen participation in border regions

The Robert Bosch Foundation has implemented the “Common Ground – Shaping Regions Across Borders” programme, which supports projects bringing together citizens, local authorities, civil society organisations and public administrations to develop joint solutions to cross-border challenges. Between 2022 and 2025, eight pilot projects were rolled out in several German border regions, notably along the borders with France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Poland and the Czech Republic.

Among these, two initiatives focus on the Franco-German border:

  • SaarMoselle, which focuses on public participation in the development of the cross-border region
  • R(h)einverbindlich, which brings together local stakeholders to promote biodiversity and a shared vision of the Rhine as a shared space.
