A new regulation harmonising the cross-border application of data protection within the EU
January 2026
On 26 November 2025, the European Parliament and the Council adopted Regulation 2025/2518, establishing harmonised procedural rules for the application of the cross-border cooperation mechanism under the GDPR.
This Regulation, which will come into force on 2 April 2027, establishes uniform criteria for the admissibility of complaints across the EU. It enhances the effectiveness of cross-border enforcement by setting clear deadlines for investigations and introducing mechanisms to speed up the resolution of cross-border cases. It thus promotes a more consistent and transparent enforcement framework for cross-border cases within the EU.
