A new cross-border heat network is being established between France and Switzerland

An innovative urban heating network, connected to CERN’s particle accelerator, has been inaugurated in Ferney-Voltaire, in the Ain department. The system recovers waste heat from CERN and integrates it into a hybrid energy infrastructure, which combines geothermal energy, complementary sources and thermal storage to provide heating and hot water. It will supply the equivalent of 5,800 homes, as well as public facilities and offices, whilst significantly reducing CO2 emissions.
