MOT-ANCT: review of the cross-border observation working group

On March 12th, 2025, the working group on cross-border observation was held in Paris.

Organised jointly by the French national agency for territorial cohesion (ANCT) and the MOT, it brought together about thirty observation experts and stakeholders from cross-border territories to discuss the data available and their current projects.

The working group was divided into two main sessions :

  • The morning was devoted to a presentation of current developments in cross-border observation at national (ANCT, INSEE, MOT), bilateral (particularly Franco-German) and European levels. This time was used to begin exchanges on the inventory of data production on various borders, and their use to improve cross-border public policies. The presentation of good practices, and in particular Interreg observation projects, revealed a growing need for the sharing and harmonisation of data on both sides of the border.
  • The afternoon session focused on the challenges of monitoring cross-border housing and land use. This presentation, followed by discussions between the various participants, highlighted the difficulties that some cross-border territories may encounter, highlighting the need for data on these subjects.

The day’s conclusions highlighted the importance of seeking consistency in the collection and use of data, as well as the need for coordination between various parties. Networks and partnerships are essential. The working group is due to meet again at a date yet to be determined.
