France-Belgium: signing of a treaty on water management
July 2025
On Monday 2 June, French Minister Jean-Noël Barrot and Flemish Minister-President Matthias Diependaele signed the ‘Moëres Treaty’ in Hondschoote. This agreement seals cross-border cooperation for water management on the border between West Flanders and Hauts-de-France (Dunkirk-Veurne-De Moeren region) by providing a solid and legally binding framework. It marks the culmination of the Interreg Mageteaux project, which focused on coordination in the face of flood risks and the establishment of joint water governance. This initiative is led by the EGTC West-Vlaanderen/Flanders-Dunkirk-Côte d’Opale.
