Maritime cooperation: A look back on the Bastia seminar
Organised by the Corsican Assembly*, it brought together elected officials, political representatives, local stakeholders and cross-border cooperation experts. Jean Peyrony, Director General of the MOT, was keynote speaker and took part in the first round-table discussion.
The first day highlighted the concept of the ‘maritime living area’, with two round tables on the specific features of insularity and the opportunities offered by increased cooperation between the coastal territories of Corsica, Sardinia, Tuscany, and the French Riviera, in a number of areas such as the blue economy, protection of the marine environment, sustainable tourism, civil defense and cultural exchanges, all within the framework of the Quirinal Treaty between France and Italy, which came into force in 2023.
The round tables on the second day focused on issues of governance and ‘legal profiles’ to support maritime cooperation; and a final political debate focused on ‘the future of the French-Italian maritime border: a local, national and European perspective’ with speakers including Marie-Antoinette Maupertuis, President of the Corsican Assembly and member of the European Committee of the Regions, Younous Omarjee, Vice-President of the European Parliament responsible for islands, and Olivier Baudelet, representative of DG REGIO.
The conclusions of these working days should help strengthen the sustainable partnership between the regions concerned and contribute to drawing up joint strategies for the integrated development of this maritime cross-border living area, and ensure that it is better taken into account at national and European levels.
* The event was organised in cooperation with the Istituto di Studi sui Sistemi Regionali Federali e sulle Autonomie ‘Massimo Severo Giannini’ – Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (ISSIRFA) and the Programme Diplomatie Territoriale (DITER) of the Université Côte d’Azur.
