Historic cross-border agreements for the financing of mobility infrastructure in Greater Geneva

On 27 November 2025, nine public authorities in Greater Geneva signed agreements aimed at strengthening cross-border mobility. More ambitious than an initial initiative launched eleven years earlier, this project, consisting of a protocol, an agreement and a letter of intent, concerns the financing of cross-border transport infrastructure for 2027-2030.

In view of the growing flow of traffic, with nearly 650,000 daily border crossings, these agreements establish a tripartite governance structure (Canton of Geneva, Department of Ain and Department of Haute-Savoie) to streamline commuter traffic by developing public transport services (high-level service buses, Ferney-Voltaire tram, large-capacity park-and-ride facilities, prioritisation of public transport on certain routes and redevelopment of an urban boulevard).

They plan to increase the financial contribution of the Cantons of Geneva and Vaud to the operation of cross-border bus lines from 40% to 60%, while the French partners would reinvest the €2.4 million annual margin to improve feeder lines. These agreements will be put to a vote in the Canton of Geneva.
