Project objectives

Officially launched on 19 November 2025 in Lyon, as a continuation of the Alcotraité project, Alcotraité 2 Transports aims to strengthen the governance of the ALCOTRA cross-border cooperation area in the field of transport in order to achieve concrete progress for those who cross the French-Italian border frequently or occasionally. With the partnership of the five regions of the land border and the methodological and technical support of the MOT, Alcotraité 2 Transports aims to capitalise on the results of the Alcotraité Technical Tables on Transport, while developing responses to the needs expressed in the questionnaire sent to the general public and stakeholders, as well as to the obstacles identified during the territorial workshops in March 2025, organised in partnership with PITER+ 21-27.

During its three-year implementation period, the project will aim to establish long-term interregional coordination for transport services, with the ultimate goal of facilitating cross-border mobility and thus improving the quality of life of citizens in the ALCOTRA area.

The project also aims to build close synergies with other ongoing initiatives, projects and studies related to transport, in particular:

  • 🔗 EUSALP (European Union Strategy for the Alpine Region)

Among the planned activities

  • Technical round tables with political and institutional actors and relevant stakeholders in this field (operators, railway managers, etc.)
  • Technical contribution to the Quirinal Treaty authorities on transport issues
  • Creation of a bilingual IT-FR transport hub to collect all the information needed by residents of border areas to travel from one side of the border to the other. In the form of a website, the hub will collect news, traffic information, information on the closure/opening of mountain passes, as well as existing bus and train lines, thereby raising the profile of cross-border services.
  • Project feedback workshops with a European dimension during events such as the Borders Forum or the European Week of Regions and Cities, as well as other local events.
