Tourism

Financing arrangements

As a cross-cutting sector, tourism is concerned by numerous EU policies. It is very present in the investment projects of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), whose budget allocation for the tourism sector is 8 billion euros.  Nevertheless, as tourism is an activity encouraging regional development around specific issues, it can also benefit from other EU financial instruments, such as the Cohesion Fund, the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), or the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF).  The EU funds notably subsidise sustainable tourism projects. At the cross-border level, tourism projects funded by the Interreg programmes.

Even though tourism does not explicitly figure among the eleven thematic priorities for cohesion policy 2014-2020, cross-border tourism projects falling under the strategy for “smart, sustainable and inclusive growth” can benefit from EU subsidies. The tourism sector is one of great potential for generating growth and jobs, and contribution to economic and social integration in rural, and mountainous areas, and maritime, island, peripheral and “outermost’ regions.
