Overview

The city of Narva is situated in Estonia, on an external border of the European Union, and of the Schengen Area. The town of Ivangorod is part of the Russian Federation. Together they count around 76,000 inhabitants.

Situated on opposite sides of the river Narva, they were one and the same town between 1704 and 1918. Cross-border cooperation, therefore recent, began with the impetus of the Interreg IIIC project "City Twins Cooperation Network” in which both communes took part. Cooperation truly started in August 2006 with the signing of a cooperation agreement which enabled the realisation of cross-border projects in areas including culture, tourism and the economy.

Since 2006, the cross-border conurbation has been a member of the “City Twins” association (a network of twin cities in Northeast Europe).
