Succeeding the Franco-German Intergovernmental Joint Commission created in 1969 and joined in 1971 by Luxembourg, the France-Germany-Luxembourg Intergovernmental Commission was officialised in 1980 with an exchange of diplomatic notes. The Intergovernmental Commission handles questions concerning cooperation between the administered regions in diverse areas (economy, environment, land-use planning, transport etc.) and works in coordination with the France-Luxembourg IGC (2010) and the Franco-German dialogue on cross-border cooperation (2009). Within this framework, it addresses recommendations to the contracting parties and, when necessary, draws up draft agreements.
