A look back at the progress of the Observ'Alp project in Turin

The Observ'Alp partners met in Turin in December 2024 to discuss the initial results of the project and the next steps. The project, funded by the Interreg ALCOTRA programme, aims to set up the first system for observing and sharing territorial data and digital services between border areas, and more specifically between France, Italy and the Principality of Monaco.

One of the highlights of these meetings was the presentation of a ‘territorial portrait’ of the Franco-Italo-Monegasque area, illustrated by six maps, a collective work carried out in particular by the project partners Città métropolitana di Torino project and the Nice Côte d'Azur metropolitan authority, in close collaboration with the Agence d'Urbanisme Azuréenne. These maps, which will be published in a brochure, show a variety of indicators such as the youth index, household size and land use, thus highlighting the specific features of this cross-border territory.

The project is also making progress in other areas, notably the Work Package 3.3 ‘A more innovative, competitive and inclusive territory’ and the Work Package 4, devoted to the open storage of data and cross-border experiments. As part of the latter, the Monegasque partners presented an innovative tsunami simulator that can be used to predict the effects of natural hazards on the coastline in order to respond to them more effectively.

On December 6th, the project's Collective Intelligence Committee (CIC) met. A presentation by the Syndicat du Pays de Maurienne on climate-meteorological indicators and natural risk prevention showed that harmonising and sharing data is a key issue along the French-Italian border, even beyond the Observ'Alp territory. Following this meeting, two technical committees made up of the Observ'Alp partners, dedicated respectively to the collection and composition of cross-border data and to its open storage, enabled in-depth discussions on the issues and the next steps of the project, in particular an important reflection on the sustainability of the project and the work required to maintain a database in the long term.

The next meetings of the Steering Committee and the CIC will be held in spring 2025 in Liguria, with the aim of continuing this collaborative dynamic.
