Five years after the Treaty of Aachen: a progress report
February 2024
On January 22nd, 2019, France and Germany signed the Franco-German cooperation and integration treaty of Aachen.
In December 2022, the Genshagen Foundation (DE) set up a working group of twelve German and French experts to assess the extent to which the innovations announced by this treaty had actually materialised, and whether it had been able to breathe new life into Franco-German relations.
According to the report, "the treaty's potential has not yet been fully exploited. Despite a number of achievements, there have been many shortcomings in implementation, as well as some shortcomings in the text. However, it is precisely in the area of civil society that the treaty has had a positive impact and given rise to a sense of renewal" .
