Conurbartion Komarno - Komarom

The cities Komárno (37 000 inhabitants) and Komárom (20 000 inhabitants) are located on both sides of Danube which marks the border between Slovakia and Hungary. Komárom (whose former name is Újszőny) was a suburb of the former Hungarian city of Komárno until 1920 when the partition of the Austro-Hungarian Empire gave raise to the creation of Czechoslovakia and Hungary. In 2007, with the accession of Slovakia and Hungary to the Schengen Area, the movement was completely free on the bridge connecting both banks of the Danube. Komárno still hosts a large Hungarian community (60% of the population). Cities cooperate formally since the establishment in 1999 of the Euroregion Danube-Váh-Ipel and participated in many projects in the fields of economic development, tourism, environment, culture or spatial planning.
