Eurocity Guben - Gubin

The Cities of Guben (20 000 inhabitants) and Gubin (17 000 inhabitants) are on the Neisse, which marks the border between Germany and Poland. Until 1945, the two cities formed one German town, whose old center Guben was located on the east bank of the Neisse. Despite the existence of links between the two cities during the Communist period, it was not until 1990 that cooperation become more sustainable allowing the sharing of certain services (treatment of household waste, sewage treatment, public transport ...). In 1991, the two cities sign a cooperation agreement, proclaim themselves Eurocity Guben/Gubin, and also take part in the Euroregion Spree-Neisse-Bober in order to coordinate projects in different fields (economy, tourism, environment Culture, communication ...). The removal of custom controls in 2007 following the accession of Poland to the Schengen Area allows Guben/Gubin for considering and a restructuring of their common urban territory by a policy of cross-border planning.
